Hall’s Reading and Essay Contests Return
RELEASE|March 19, 2026
Contact: Matt Hall

State Rep. Matt Hall is continuing his initiative designed to foster the next generation of thinkers, writers, and leaders in our community. As part of his ongoing commitment to supporting education and promoting literacy, he announced another year of Hall’s Reading and Essay Contest for local students. Winners from each category will be invited to the state capitol to be “Representative for a Day”. This contest provides an opportunity for young people to explore their creativity, engage with important themes, and hone their writing skills.

State Rep. Matt Hall encourages students to reflect on the role of words—whether spoken, written, or read—in shaping the world around them. He looks forward to hearing their thoughts on how the books they’ve read and the ideas they’ve encountered could impact their future. The contest details are as follows.

1st-5th Graders: Read as many books as you can during March 1 through April 18 and track your progress. Then please submit a list of books and their total pages numbers here

6th-8th Graders:  Write a 1–2-page maximum essay about your Favorite Michigan Figure. That could be an athlete, celebrity, or other influential figure. Be creative and be bold! You can share your submission here.  The deadline is April 18.
