State Rep. Ken Borton on Thursday was appointed by Speaker Matt Hall, R-Richland, to serve as a member of the House Appropriations Committee; Chairman of the Agriculture and Rural Development and Natural Resources Appropriations Subcommittee; Vice-Chair of the Department of Environment Great Lakes and Energy Appropriations Subcommittee; and a member of the State and Local Transportation and School Aid and Department of Education Appropriations Subcommittees.
“We have a responsibility to protect recreational opportunities for people across Michigan. If DNR bureaucrats don’t give up their attempts to raise fees, clear-cut forests, and support policies that chase people away from the outdoors, we will zero out their budget and get them out of the way,” said Borton, R-Gaylord. “This isn’t going to be an easy job. We’re talking about a budget that was over $82 billion dollars last year. We have a responsibility to look at every department and the programs they operate and ensure every dollar of waste is cut.”
Borton, a long-time critic of the DNR, said he hopes DNR leadership will be willing to join him in efforts to ensure every dollar being spent is truly in the best interest of the public.
The third-term lawmaker was first elected to the 105th House District in 2020. His district includes Crawford, Missaukee, Otsego, and Roscommon counties and parts of Antrim, Kalkaska, and Oscoda counties.
