State Rep. Jaime Greene, right, meets with Riley Gaines, a former All-American NCAA swimmer who was forced to compete in the 2022 Women’s Swimming National Championships against Lia Thomas, a biological male.
State Rep. Jaime Greene has reintroduced legislation to protect female athletes and ensure they have a fair playing field in Michigan sports competitions.
Female athletes across the country continue to raise concerns about fairness and safety in sports. Greene pointed to the experience of former All-American NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines, who was forced to compete in the 2022 Women’s Swimming National Championships against Lia Thomas, a biological male.
“Women fought hard for decades to establish Title IX protections and secure equal opportunities in sports,” said Greene, R-Richmond. “Allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports undermines these protections and disadvantages female athletes who deserve a level playing field. Michigan’s girls and women have the right to fair competition, and I will continue to fight to ensure they are not sidelined.”
Greene’s House Bill 4031, known as the Female Athletics Integrity of Records (FAIR) Act, would require awards, rankings, and records of sporting events to be categorized consistently with each competitor’s biological sex. The requirement would apply to any publicly funded event for which there are separate female and male competitions.
“The integrity of women’s sports is at stake, and we must take action to preserve the opportunities that generations of women have worked so hard to achieve,” Greene said. “This legislation is about fairness, equal opportunity, and protecting the future of women’s athletics in our state.”
House Bill 4031 was referred to the House Education and Workforce Committee for consideration.
