State Rep. Doug Wozniak (R-Shelby Township) today commended the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s (EGLE) decision to fine Oakland County for the continued discharge of raw sewage into the Red Run Drain, which ultimately affects Macomb County residents and Lake St. Clair.

“This enforcement action is a necessary step toward protecting Macomb County families and restoring accountability,” said Wozniak. “For too long, Oakland County’s negligence has jeopardized our water systems and left our communities to deal with the fallout. EGLE’s decision makes it clear that this kind of pollution will no longer be tolerated.”

EGLE’s enforcement notice cited repeated violations by Oakland County, including overflows of 1.18 million gallons on April 3 and 2.2 million gallons on August 24, 2023. The sewage overflow left behind visible debris and contaminants along the Red Run Drain, which is a problem Macomb officials, including Wozniak and Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller, have been sounding the alarm on for years.

“This is exactly why I introduced House Bill 4035 earlier this year,” Wozniak said. “My bill aims to strengthen penalties for illegal sewage discharges and clarify local responsibilities, because it’s unacceptable that Macomb residents are stuck dealing with the consequences of Oakland County’s negligence.”

HB 4035, introduced in January, would help ensure stronger accountability mechanisms for inter-county water infrastructure violations.

“This is a big win for Macomb County, and a step in the right direction,” Wozniak said. “But the work isn’t done. We must remain vigilant to ensure Oakland County follows through on its obligations and that our water remains clean, safe, and protected for generations to come.”
